Explanation of the Light and Metering

The professional photographer before taking pictures, they always measure light with a special tool called Light Meter. This tool is a light-sensitive sensor and can count the number of shutter and aperture values for various situations, either bright or dark. Necessarily the same light as measured by the light of the object (called the incident light) and become the benchmark how bright the ambient light at that time. That so-called metering, according to the professional photographer.




We are accustomed to using modern and versatile automatic camera certainly strange with similar gear. Because in the modern cameras are available that facilitate and metering facilities are also available various metering modes such as Center Weighted or Spot metering. DSLR cameras even capable of displaying a light meter scale on the LCD screen (and in the viewfinder) so as to indicate whether the shutter and aperture settings that we set in accordance with the measurement camera (see picture below).


For most cases, the camera is capable of metering equipment to replace the function light meter that expensive special. When using an automatic camera (camera phones, pocket cameras, etc.), metering the camera will start working when the LCD screen displays pictures and continuously evaluate the condition of light until the shutter button is pressed half. When the button is pressed half, metering will be locked (AE lock) and also auto focus (AF-lock) until the button is fully pressed before photos are taken. The majority of photos taken by automatic mode gives the right exposure. In some cases there are times when metering is missed, a little dark or too bright, we can compensate with the Exposure Compensation to the minus or plus.
